There are different types of passports issued and each country has its own rules. But there are some general characteristics common to most are :

[1] A passport is normally valid for all countries unless exceptions are specified.

[2] A passport is usually valid for 10 years.

[3] A passport that has expired or pages left for visas must be replaced by a new one.

[4] Children above the age of 16 generally require separate passport.

[5] A passport is the property of the issuing authority and can be withdrawn at any time.

The travel agent’s duty is to see that clients wishing to travel to another country require a passport and that it is valid for the entire trip.Validity of passport is very important as some countries insist that the client’s passport must be valid for 6 months beyond his stay in that particular country.

The agent should advise that clients holding joint passport must travel together. For example if a mother and child are traveling to Europe, the mother would not be able to go to the USA leaving her child behind because the child will not have any proof of legal entry into Europe and therefore would not be able to leave without the mother.
